508 remediation

Section 508 remediation for the files you already have.

We fix existing PDFs, Word documents and PowerPoint decks so they pass Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA review. Every file is tagged, tested to the HHS checklists and returned with a conformance note.

If a file we deliver doesn’t pass your 508 review, we fix it at no cost.

  • Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA

  • Tested against the HHS checklists

  • A conformance note with every file

How it works

Sorted, fixed, tested and documented.

Send us the files, or a link to where they live. Every file goes through the same four steps.

  1. Sort. We help you decide what to fix, what to archive and what’s cheaper to rebuild.

  2. Fix. We tag headings, lists and tables, set the reading order, write alt text that explains, check contrast and add the document title and language.

  3. Test. Every file is checked with automated tools and by hand against the HHS checklists for PDF, Word and PowerPoint.

  4. Document. You get the fixed file, its source file when we have one, and a conformance note for your records.

What we fix

Documents people need to read and use.

  • Reports, briefs and toolkits

  • Fact sheets, handouts and guides

  • PowerPoint decks and webinar slides

  • Word documents and templates

  • Infographics, charts and data visuals, with alt text and a text version when they need one

Designed by us or by someone else, new or years old. If your team keeps making the same kinds of documents, accessible templates mean every new one starts accessible, so there’s far less to fix later.

Questions we hear

508 remediation, in plain language.

What is 508 remediation?

It’s fixing an existing digital document so people who use screen readers, magnification or a keyboard can read and use it. For federal work, Section 508 applies WCAG 2.0 Level AA to documents. We build to WCAG 2.1 AA, which covers it and is the standard in the newer Section 504 and ADA Title II rules.

Isn’t an automated checker enough?

No. Checkers catch some problems, but they can’t tell whether alt text makes sense or the reading order is logical. A person has to check every file, and we do.

Will remediation make our documents ADA compliant?

We fix files to WCAG 2.1 AA, the standard named in the 2027 ADA Title II and Section 504 rules, and test them against the HHS checklists. Whether your organization complies depends on all of your web content, so we also help you decide what to fix first.

Do we have to fix every old PDF on our website?

Not always. The Section 504 and ADA Title II rules have exceptions, including for archived content and for some documents posted before the deadline. Documents people still use to apply for or take part in your services generally have to be accessible. A checkup shows you what to fix first. General information, not legal advice.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

It depends on how many pages you have and how complex they are. After we see the files, you get a fixed price and a timeline. Projects start at $4,500.
